Abstract: This paper judged the direction of regional compressive stress axis, based on the source mechanism of the strong, moderate, small earthquakes and the composite fault plane solution of small earhtquakes in several regions of the north segment of the South-North Seismic Belt (from Shongp-an to Wuyuan) from 1970 to 1983, and discussed the general tectonic compressive stress direction in the segment. This paper also determined the predominant direction of the fault belt based on the aftershock distributions of the moderate, strong earthquakes and on the long axis of the isoseismic zone, and discussed the characteristics of current tectonic movement in the north segment.
