Abstract:
The juncture of Shanxi, Hebei, Shandong and Henan provinces is a tectonic location where the first-order tectonic units of North China block-T aihang mountain fault block, Hebei-Shan dong fault block and Anhui-Henan fault block meet. Also, it is a twisted region of Taihang mountain piedmont fault zone,Cangdong-Liaokao fault zone (striking NE-NNE) and Cixian-Damis fault and Xinxiang-Shangqiu fault (striking NW), and it forms a saddlelike structure, which is centered at Neihuang rise, uplifting at eastern and western sides and subsiding at southern and northern sides. From neotectonic activity and earthquake mechanism we conclude, this region has been controlled by NEE-SWW regional principle compressive stress since the late Tertiary and Quaternary? so the neotectonic activity has been dominated by horizontal shearings and associated with tilting and constrained block motion on the basis of the original elevation and subsidence. The seismicity in this region appears as zonal distribution,is obviously controlled by Taihang mountain piedmont fault zone and Cangdong-Liaokao fault zone, and forms Taihang mountain piedmont and Cangdong-Liaokao seismic belts. The intersecting of the NWW-striking faults is usually as a specific earthquake-induced condition. It seems that, under the influence of the constrained motion of Neihuang rise block, the major strong and moderate earthquakes in this region symmetrically distribute around this block,
