DISCUSSION ON THE CAUSE OF THE GROUND FISSURES IN HANDAN CITY, HEBEI PROVINCE

The Handan City ground-fissures are composed of three fault zones, striking NNE.The ground-fissures were developed rapidly in 1968.Since 1978 many new buildings h-ave been damaged by ground fissures.Cracks on many houses, enclosing wall, ground a-nd pipes.The fissures are tensional.There are vertical displacements on both sides of the ground-fissures.The clockwise-twisted appear in a few places phnomenon.Accord-ing to the analysis and synthesis of the ground subsidence in Handan City, the change of the groundwater level and the recent activity of the Handan fault, we think that the character of Handan City ground-fissures is different from that of the fissures w-hich are caused by the ground-water funnel.The formation of Handan City ground-fi-ssures is the result of recent activity of the Handan fault.
