THE SEISMIC ACTIVITIES IN CENTRAL SHANXI PROVINCE AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE

  • The seismicity in central Shanxi Province are characterized by high freq-uency because of its particularly tectonic sites. Its speciality is described by that moderate strong earthquake occured frequently in this region,althou-gh there is a migration in spatial distribution for strong shocks in the past seismic active period in North China, and by that microseismicities in the zone in the rising frequency period reflect strong earthquake activities in No-rth China from data of network of stations as well. There were migrations of strong earthquakes (Ms≥7)from south to north or in reverse in Shanxi sei-smic zone and the central Shanxi province was a central region of opposite migrations. Finally,it is suggested that the central Shanxi seismic zone is a sensitive area of seismic activity in North China, and the precursor inform-ation of strong earthquake may be obtained by the study of seismicity in this area.
