STUDY ON THE POTENTIAL STRONG EARTHQUAKE ZONE ALONG THE BOUNDARY OF ORDOS BLOCK

  • it is known from the geological structure and its activity that all the downfaulted basins along the boundary of Ordos block have the potential risk of strong earthquake.Based on the study on historic and current seismicity, we believe that the earthquakes in the region can be characterized by gap-filling.It means, that there is less possibility of strong earthquakes in the near future in the basins where strong earthquake occured in history, whereas the basin that small and moderate quakes occurred frequently and incessantly in recent several decades may be the potential region of strong earthquake (M > 7 even M > 8), such as Linhe Basin, Baiyanhua Basin, Huhehaote-Baotou Basin, Datong Basin and Yanqing Basin.
